4 stars for the song "In Time." Otherwise 2 stars. / 4
The stand-outs from this album are Lather and In Time. Crown of Creation is also an interesting song.
(1) Lather is a cute novelty song. It starts out with some whispered words, and includes typewriter sounds, seagull sounds, and a child's voice saying, "Mommy!" The lyrics are a creative wonder, dealing with childhood, and include, e.g., "Drawing pictures of mountains that look like bumps." The style "rebus" refers to a written story where pictures are used in place of some words. Therefore, the song Lather is a sort of rebus pop song, as it is illustrated various sounds. Generally, the song has two chords that go back and forth, though there are variations. (2) In Time continuously shifts here and there, or lurches to and fro, driven by the bass guitar. The overall style of In Time is clearly unique, as shown by the gentle acoustic guitar strummings that are pierced, now and then, by tasteful, restrained licks from the lead electric guitar. Five stars for In Time. (3) Triad (no comment). (4) Star Track really doesn't have much of a tune. The song Star Track sounds alot like Spooky (recorded by the Classics IV). (5) Share a Little Joke doesn't have much of any tune. The voice just goes up and down. The continual tremelo guitar, fed through a flanger, tends to ruin the song. (6) Cushingura is just some electronics and drums, lasting for about 30 seconds. (7) If You Feel is a recitative. It doesn't have any tune. The continual wha-wha pedal tends to ruin the song, though already it wasn't really much of a song. (8) Crown of Creation is an interesting composition, with multiple voices, and a driving feel. Something seems missing-- the song should have been twice as long. Crown of Creation has an ambitious quality, but it seems not to have arrived at any destination. (9) Ice Cream Pheonix really has no tune to speak of, just multiple voices reciting words. (10) Greasy Heart has no tune to speak of. Grace Slick sings with some interesting voice inflections, but are interesting vocal inflections enough to make Greasy Heart a decent pop-song? The wha-wha pedal is in abundance here. (11) The House at Pooneil Corners has an interesting style to it. The song has a dreary quality to it, like something from Siouxie and the Banshees. Again, there is not really any discernable tune. (12) Ribump Ba Bap Dum Dum is a minute long sound collage. (13) Would You Like a Snack is by Frank Zappa. It is a two minute sound collage. (14) The Saga of Sydney Spacepig is eight minutes long. It is a sound collage with blues guitar riffs, tone clusters on the piano, talking, and intentional noises.
To conclude, if you were hoping for another Surrealistic Pillow, then you will be sorely disappointed by the album, Crown of Creation. Most of the songs on Crown of Creation appear to be jam sessions, with tuneless vocal recitatives. As a passing note, Surrealistic Pillow is arguably the best album to come from any San Francisco rock'n'roll group, and is one of the greatest creations in the history of rock'n'roll.
Song "Just The Same"
There's a light from afar
Like some distant star
It doesn't really matter where you are
One man was happy
One lived in sorrow
Overseer said they'll meet tomorrow
One man was wealthy
One had to borrow
Overseer said they'll meet tomorrow
There's a light from afar
Like some distant star
It doesn't really matter where you are
It's just the same
Moon's silver face
Dark shadows on the wall
Light playing games as evening falls
And when the sunshine
Can't warm your heart again
Soar with the starlight on the evening wind
There's a light from afar
Like some distant star
It doesn't really matter where you are
There's a way
Even though your heart is broken
Now by the close
Of one door
Another opens
Leave your heat wide open
The door will open
There's a light from afar
Like some distant star
It doesn't matter where you are
It's just the same
It's just the same
It's just the same
It's just the same

Votes From the Underground (MetroActive)
"We love San Jose Rocks, our local version of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But let's keep it as weird as the scene has always been. Here are our decidedly offbeat suggestions for future honorees."
