Sold a gazillion copies, but is it any good? / 4
...and the answer, sports fans, is yes. OK, so maybe Out on the Weekend and Words are not is best performances, and maybe There's a World is overblown, but this is still one of the finer albums in rock. And of course, it was Neil's only #1 album and yielded his only #1 single, Heart of Gold which is a great tune! And of course it's got Old Man and Needle & the Damage Done, two other great songs.
But there a couple lesser-discussed songs worthy of merit. For instance, I like Alabam, Neil's rant against southern racism, as well as the enormously contreversial A Man Needs a Maid. (not for the message mind, but the arrangement). The title track and Are You Ready for the Country are also great pieces of music.
Though this isn't Neil's best album (that would be Everybody Knows This IS nowehere) Harvest is definetly worth a slot in your collection.

Song "Barstool Blues"
If I could hold on
to just one thought
For long enough to know
Why my mind is moving so fast
And the conversation is slow.
Burn off all the fog
And let the sun
through to the snow
Let me see your face again
Before I have to go.

I have seen you in the movies
And in those magazines at night
I saw you on the barstool when
You held that glass so tight.
And I saw you in my nightmares
But I'll see you in my dreams
And I might live a thousand years
Before I know what that means.

Once there was a friend of mine
Who died a thousand deaths
His life was filled with parasites
And countless idle threats.
He trusted in a woman
And on her he made his bets
Once there was a friend of mine
Who died a thousand deaths.
